Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
