Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
